Brief
Hiko is a 19-year-old girl who lives on a floating island called Ukishima. Her home island is surrounded by floating islands of different sizes and shapes, all the result of the great explosion 3347 years before. Over the years, the islands have come back to life with water from the sky, so each island has flowing streams and rivers from the mountains, as well as flat green land, huge trees and colorful flowers.
After the invention of airships, people connected the islands by building airship harbors or bridges on almost every island. Since airships were very expensive in the beginning, only rich people could afford to buy and settle land on the upper half of the island. Only when Samura succeeded in building a functional airship from war remains, the poor people could settle on the lower half of the islands too.
Since then, the islands have been divided into an upper rich half and a lower poor half. Since there is very little space on the lower half of the islands and the risk of falling is very high, the poor people have invented strong tools to drill through the very hard rocky bottom of the island and are mainly engaged in building the village to make it safer.
Hiko lives in the lower poor half of Ukishima. She lives with her grandfather in the converted remains of a wartime submarine, the lower half of which houses an airship workshop. There, she usually helps her grandfather repair airships or assists in the expansion of her home town at various construction sites around the village.
